Resources and Training
In order to meet HIPAA-related training requirements (including those related to the health and safety compliance question sets) individuals can complete their HIPAA training through the Brainier Learning Management System (ELMS) and CITI modules.
Below is a list of the online HIPAA courses offered by the Office of Ethics and Compliance detailing who should take particular courses and how to access them. In addition, scroll down for FAQs.

Instructions for Enrolling in the HIPAA Training Courses
Go to the Emory Self-Service portal and log in using your Emory NETID. Select the "Learning Management" tile from the Self-Service options, then select "Learning Management-Brainier." Please selected the "All Learning" tab, choose "Author" and type in "Patrice Saunders" to locate the courses. You may also use the search box at the top of the screen to search by course name and follow the prompts to access the course.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which HIPAA courses should I take?
Question: I received an email from HR to complete the HIPAA training modules. I am not sure which courses to take.
Answer: The Office of Ethics and Compliance does not manually assign HIPAA compliance training courses. The requirement for training courses is typically triggered when an individual's profile/role is entered into PeopleSoft. Please click on the following link to review the description of the HIPAA Compliance courses to determine your required courses: https://ethicsandcompliance.emory.edu/resources-training/index.html.
Accessing the HIPAA courses via Brainier.
Question: I was notified that I needed to complete HIPAA training. How do I access the HIPAA training courses via Brainier?
Answer: Go to the Emory Self-Service portal and log in using your Emory NETID and Password.
Select the "Learning Management" tile from the Self-Service options, then select "Learning Management-Brainier."

Question: I am unable to log into the self-service portal. My email and password are correct.
Answer: Please send an email to talent.management@emory.edu and include your NETID and inform them that you’re having trouble accessing the portal.
Question: I am logged into the self-service portal and see neither the 'Learning Management Brainier' or 'Request Brainier LMS Access' tiles,
Answer: Please create a ServiceNow ticket at tmhelp@emory.edu or send an email to talent.management@emory.edu and include your NETID.
Question: I am a student. How do I gain access to the HIPAA training platform (Brainier)?
Answer: Go to the Emory Self-Service portal and log in using your Emory NETID and Password.
Select the "Learning Management" tile from the Self-Service options, then select "Learning Management-Brainier."
If you do not have the Learning Management Brainier tile, please select the "Request Brainier LMS Access" tile to request access. It may take 24 to 48 hours for access to be granted.
Question:I requested access to Brainier LMS more than 48 hours ago and still have not received a response.
Answer: It normally takes 24-48 hours (business days) to receive access to Brainier. If you do not have access after this time, please reach out to HR Technical Services (HR-EUHRTS@emory.edu) for assistance with gaining access.
Question: I have completed the training, but my progress remains at 50%.
Answer: Clearing your cache and playing the training through to the end will often resolve this issue.
Question: I have already taken the HIPAA courses, but I just recently changed position. Do I need to retake the courses?
Answer: If you've recently changed position, the system will automatically trigger updated training requirements.

Question: How do I access my Certificate of Completion?
Answer: Go to “My Learning” from your dashboard then click on the arrow at the end of the course title to download the certificate. Alternatively, you can select the course then click on the arrow below the green box (upper right) to download the certificate.
Accessing the CITI Training
Question: How do I access the CITI Training?
Answer: Go to the CITI website (CITI - Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (www.citiprogram.org). Select “Log in through my organizations,” then click on “See our full list of SSO-enabled organizations,” and find Emory University, to login. This affiliates yourself with the university. Click on Add Course. There will be a short questionnaire. You are not a Study Team member, but you should answer, as if you are, to populate the above CITI trainings. Please select the CITI Health Privacy and Information Security course textbox and click “Next” to be enrolled in the course.
HIPAA Training from other departments
Question: I have completed the HIPAA for Nursing Students and Bloodborne Pathogen modules and cannot access my certificates.
Answer: The Office of Ethics and Compliance does not manage those training courses. Please contact the School of Nursing (SON-Compliance@emory.edu) for assistance.
Question: I have already completed the Open Sesame courses. Do I still need to complete the HIPAA compliance training?
Answer: Open Sesame courses are optional and will not satisfy the HIPAA training courses required by the Office of Ethics and Compliance.
